can you suggest a good clay for making smoking pipes? what kind of clay is non-toxic after drying?

I think a lot of folks use a low fire eartenware as in this video I found on youtube:

Historically they were also slip cast out of porcelain.
Pretty much any clay is non-toxic after being fully kiln fired but not all can handle direct flame very well.
I would try Sheffield Mass White with Silica sand and fire to cone 06. Maybe glaze the out side but leave the inside unglazed. If you are doing cone 6 stoneware, try that, but maybe avoid manganese speckled stoneware.
